Summer 2023 CitiBike trips routed onto the street network and totalled for each street segment. Line width and brightness increase with the number of trips on a street, so the most-used cycling routes stand out. The scale adapts to the current view: zoom into an area and its busiest streets are re-graded across the full range.
All 10.6 million summer 2023 trips, animated along the street network. The clock advances at real-world pace and shows the date and time of day. CitiBike records only each trip's start and end station, not the route taken; the path drawn for every trip is an estimated route between its two stations along the street network, not the rider's actual GPS track.
